If the car will not restart afterwards
Most vehicles start straight up once there is fuel in the tank. Some need to crank for a few seconds while the line refills, and a small number of diesels need bleeding before they will run at all.
Running a tank completely dry can also draw debris off the bottom into the fuel filter. If the engine will not pick up after fuel goes in, that is a workshop problem rather than something to keep cranking at, and we will tell you so rather than emptying your battery trying.

Before we get there
If anyone is injured, or the vehicle is blocking a live lane, call 911 first — then call us. Hazard lights on, and get well clear of moving traffic if you can safely do so. When you call, tell us the cross streets or the expressway and the direction you were heading, what you are driving, and whether it still rolls and steers.
Running out in a live lane rather than on the shoulder is the dangerous version of this call. If that is where you are, ring 911 before you ring us.

Do you deliver diesel as well as gasoline?
Tell us which your vehicle takes when you call and we will confirm what we can bring you before anyone drives out. Getting this wrong is expensive, so we would rather ask twice than guess once.
Can you come out to an expressway shoulder?
Tell us the expressway, the direction you were heading and the nearest exit number, and we will tell you on the phone whether we can reach you safely. If the vehicle is blocking a live lane, that is a 911 call before it is ours.
I put the wrong fuel in. Can you drain it?
No. A contaminated tank needs draining and flushing properly before the engine is run, and that is workshop work rather than a roadside job. The single most useful thing you can do is not start the engine.
Is it cheaper to just walk to a station with a can?
Sometimes, and if you are two safe blocks from a pump in daylight then that is a reasonable call. On an expressway, at night, or in weather, it is not — and carrying fuel in an unapproved container is its own problem.
